The Story Behind our Ethos

As a Christian avid reader, writer, academic and mother I am keenly aware of the impact

books have. Just as the kind of food we eat affects our health either positively or negatively, the kinds of content we consume - film, music, social media and of course books - affect our emotional and mental wellbeing in various ways.

Akenkan’s evolution into a carefully curated book space was therefore inspired by my personal quest to find books for myself and my children that reflect our Christian values and our African heritage while giving them a glimpse into the wonders in the rest of the world. To ensure this, I began to adopt an intentional and selective approach towards our reading choices. This is the approach I bring to the selections we offer at Akenkan; careful thought is put into every book and product we provide.

Bringing in my academic expertise I thoroughly research potential stock for their content, and the values they espouse before making them available to our customers.

If you’re looking for a bookstore that provides books and products whose content you don’t have to second guess look no further than Akenkan. Here, if the book doesn’t pass the vibe check, we don’t sell it.

We invite you to join us on this exciting journey as we explore and dive into stories that take us to new and familiar worlds, inspire a lifelong love of learning, and build strong faith.
